The famous designer Jean Paul Gaultier entered the fashion world without any formal training. He pestered renowned designers with his own sketches until fashion designer Pierre Cardin hired him as his assistant.
Jean Paul Gaultier changed mentors several times and presented his first collection in 1976.
He was soon dubbed the ‘enfant terrible’ (terrible child) of the French fashion scene.
Gaultier was by no means highly regarded at the time, but he was original. He quietly drew his inspiration from the streets of France and sent tattooed models and plus-size women down the catwalk. He did the same with his perfumes.
Jean Paul Gaultier packaged his women's perfume Classique in a torso with breasts. Le Male, currently one of the best-selling men's fragrances in Europe, is advertised by a sailor with flowers tattooed on his nipples.
